Unfitted Kitchens: The Freestanding Look Explained

Unfitted Kitchens: The Freestanding Look Explained

An unfitted kitchen, also called a freestanding kitchen, is made from individual pieces of furniture rather than continuous runs of built-in units: a dresser, a larder cupboard, a sink cabinet, a range and a big table or island. It feels relaxed, characterful and personal, and because each piece stands on its own, you can move it, add to it or take it with you when you move house.

At Oak & Pine by Design, we make freestanding kitchen furniture and fitted kitchens by hand in our Honley workshop. Here's how the unfitted look works, and how to get it right.

What is an unfitted kitchen?

Before fitted kitchens became standard in the 20th century, kitchens were furnished like any other room. Each piece had a job, and together they made a working kitchen. An unfitted kitchen revives that idea with modern practicality.

Typical pieces include:

  • A dresser for crockery, glassware and display
  • A tall larder or pantry cupboard for food storage
  • A sink cabinet, often with a Belfast sink
  • A freestanding range cooker
  • A work table or island as the main prep surface
  • A plate rack or open shelves on the wall

Pros and cons of an unfitted kitchen

ProsCons
Full of character and personalityUsually less worktop space than fitted runs
Pieces can move with youGaps between pieces need cleaning
Easy to add to over timeIntegrated appliances are harder to hide
Suits period homes and uneven wallsNeeds careful planning to work well

The best of both: a semi-fitted kitchen

Many people choose a mix: a fitted run for the sink, dishwasher and main worktop, with freestanding pieces for the larder, dresser and island. You get the storage and practicality of fitted units with the charm of furniture. It's often the smartest approach for a busy family kitchen.

Unfitted kitchen ideas

1. Start with a statement dresser

A dresser anchors the whole room. We make hand-painted Welsh dressers with solid oak tops, and each one is a proper piece of furniture that will outlast the kitchen around it.

2. Add a tall larder

A freestanding larder with shelves, spice racks and drawers replaces several wall cabinets and puts everything in one place.

3. Make the island a table

A solid wood work table on turned legs, rather than a boxy island, gives an airy, traditional feel.

4. Mix finishes

Unfitted kitchens don't need to match. Try a painted dresser, a natural oak table and a waxed pine larder together.

5. Use reclaimed timber

Reclaimed pine brings the age and patina that suit a freestanding kitchen perfectly.

Why freestanding kitchen furniture should be handmade

In an unfitted kitchen, every piece is on show from every side. There are no filler panels or wall units to hide behind, so proportion, joinery and finish matter far more. Handmade furniture is built with traditional joints, solid timber and a hand-applied finish, so it looks right and lasts.

Some clients come back to us piece after piece. Martin Garner has had wardrobes, chests of drawers, bedside cabinets, a Welsh dresser, a kitchen tallboy and a hall sideboard made in our workshop: "A fantastic service, with craftsman, made to measure products that I would highly recommend."

Frequently asked questions

Are unfitted kitchens practical?

Yes, with good planning. Many people combine a fitted sink run with freestanding pieces to get the best of both.

Is an unfitted kitchen cheaper?

Not necessarily. Each piece is a complete item of furniture, finished on every side. But you can build it up over time, and take it with you if you move.

Do unfitted kitchens suit small rooms?

They can. A small sink cabinet, a larder and a table can make a charming, efficient cottage kitchen.

Can you mix freestanding and fitted units?

Yes. It's one of the most popular approaches, and we can design and make both so everything works together.
