The best painted kitchen colours are ones that suit your light, your worktops and the age of your house. Soft whites and creams, sage and olive greens, muted blues and warm greys are timeless choices, while deep navy, forest green and charcoal make a confident statement. The secret is testing colours on painted timber in your own kitchen, at different times of day, before you commit.
At Oak & Pine by Design, we've hand-painted kitchens for over 25 years in our Honley workshop, and we offer a colour-matching service for any shade you love. Here's how to choose a colour you'll still like in ten years.
Timeless painted kitchen colours
Cream and soft white
Classic, bright and easy to live with. Cream is warmer than brilliant white and suits period homes and farmhouse kitchens. It's lovely with oak worktops and brass handles.
Sage and olive green
Green has become the modern classic. It brings the outdoors in, suits both cottages and new builds, and pairs perfectly with natural wood. One of our recent kitchens is a hand-painted sage green Shaker with a solid wood worktop.

Muted and navy blue
Pale blue-greys feel calm and fresh. Deep navy is smart and dramatic, especially on an island or lower cabinets.
Warm grey and stone
Greys with a warm undertone work in almost any kitchen and hide everyday marks well. We recently made a grey hand-painted Shaker kitchen with a solid wood worktop.
Deep and dark shades
Charcoal, forest green and aubergine can look stunning in a big, bright room. In a small or north-facing kitchen, use them on the island or base units only.
How to choose the right colour for your kitchen
1. Check which way the room faces
North-facing kitchens get cool, bluish light, so warmer colours stop them feeling cold. South-facing kitchens get warm light, which makes cooler greens, blues and greys glow.
2. Start with the things you can't change
Your floor, worktops, splashback and any exposed stone or brick all have undertones. Choose a cabinet colour that works with them, not against them.
3. Test on painted timber, not paper
Colour looks different on a painted door than on a small card. Paint a sample board and move it around the room in morning, afternoon and artificial light.
4. Think about the age of your house
Period homes suit softer, slightly greyed colours. New builds can carry crisper whites and bolder contrasts.
5. Plan for the long term
If you love bold colour, use it where it's easy to change, such as the island. The beauty of a hand-painted solid wood kitchen is that it can be repainted in place later, without replacing a single door.

Two-tone painted kitchens
Two-tone kitchens use one colour on the wall cabinets and another on the base units or island. It's a clever way to add depth without overwhelming a room. Popular pairings:
- Cream wall units with sage or navy base units
- Soft white runs with a dark green or charcoal island
- Warm grey units with a natural oak island
We've made two-tone Shaker kitchens for Yorkshire homes, including an L-shaped design.
What goes with a painted kitchen?
- Worktops: solid oak or other hardwood adds warmth to any painted colour
- Handles: brass for warmth, black iron for contrast, nickel or chrome for a cooler look
- Sink: a white ceramic Belfast sink suits almost every painted kitchen
- Walls: go a shade lighter or darker than the cabinets for a calm, tonal look
Why hand-painted beats factory-sprayed
Most mass-produced painted kitchens are sprayed MDF. They look good at first, but a chip can't really be repaired, and a colour change means new doors.
A hand-painted solid wood kitchen is different. The finish is applied by hand in our workshop, it has a subtle, natural character, and it can be touched in or completely repainted in your home years later. Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular painted kitchen colour?
Soft greens, creams and warm greys remain the most enduring choices, because they suit natural wood worktops and both old and new homes.
What colour kitchen never goes out of style?
Warm whites, creams and muted greens have stayed popular for decades. Choose a soft rather than stark version for the longest life.
Can you match a specific paint colour?
Yes. We offer a colour-matching service, so you can bring us the exact shade you want.
Can a painted kitchen be repainted later?
A hand-painted solid wood kitchen can be repainted in place with the right preparation. That's much harder with sprayed MDF or vinyl-wrapped doors.
