An oak kitchen is one of the most durable, timeless kitchens you can buy. Solid oak is hard-wearing, has a strong, beautiful grain, and can be sanded and refinished for decades. Today's oak kitchens range from classic golden oak Shaker to pale, matt light oak with a clean, modern feel, and oak pairs beautifully with painted units too.
Oak is in our name. At Oak & Pine by Design, we've been making solid oak kitchens by hand in our Honley workshop for over 25 years. Here's everything you need to choose the right oak kitchen.
Why choose an oak kitchen?

- Strength: oak is a dense hardwood that stands up to daily family life
- Character: its bold grain means every kitchen is unique
- Longevity: dents and wear can be sanded out and re-oiled
- Versatility: it suits country cottages, period homes and modern builds
- Heirloom quality: a well-made oak kitchen can last for generations
Oak Shaker kitchens
The simple frame-and-panel Shaker door is a perfect match for oak. It shows off the grain without fuss, and it looks right in almost any home. An oak Shaker kitchen can go traditional with cup handles and a warm finish, or modern with slim pulls and a pale matt lacquer. See our handmade Shaker kitchens.
Light oak kitchens
Light oak is the modern face of oak: pale, matt and natural, with a calm, Scandinavian feel. It's achieved through timber selection and finish, for example a clear matt or lightly whitened oil that keeps the wood close to its raw colour. Light oak looks especially good with:
- White or pale grey walls
- Soft green or stone painted units
- Pale stone or quartz worktops
- Matt black or brushed brass handles
Oak and painted kitchens
You don't have to choose between wood and colour. Some of the most beautiful kitchens combine the two:
- Painted cabinets with solid oak worktops
- A painted kitchen with an oak island
- Oak base units with painted wall units
- Oak open shelves against painted runs

Frequently asked questions
Are oak kitchens back in fashion?
Yes. Light and natural oak, and oak paired with painted units, are very popular because they feel warm, natural and long-lasting.
How do you modernise an oak kitchen?
Refinish in a paler matt finish, change the handles, add painted units or an island, or update the worktops. Solid oak makes all of these possible.
How do you look after an oak kitchen?
Clean with a soft, damp cloth, wipe spills promptly, and re-oil oiled surfaces from time to time. Scratches can be sanded out.
Is oak better than pine for a kitchen?
Oak is harder and more dent-resistant. Pine is lighter in colour and weight, and more affordable. Both make beautiful kitchens.
