Bespoke vs fitted vs flat-pack: what's the difference?
The words get used loosely, so it's worth being clear:
- Flat-pack wardrobes come in fixed sizes. They're cheap, but they rarely fill a room properly and leave gaps at the ceiling and sides.
- "Fitted" wardrobes from large retailers are usually standard carcasses in set widths, trimmed with filler panels to look built-in. Most are made from chipboard or MDF.
- Bespoke wardrobes are designed and built from scratch for your room. Every measurement is yours, so there's no wasted space and no filler strips.
All three can look similar on day one. The difference shows after ten years of doors opening and closing, and when you move rooms around.
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes?
1. The shape of your room
Sloping ceilings, chimney breasts, alcoves and bay windows all add design and making time. They're also exactly where made-to-measure pays for itself. We specialise in turning the most awkward alcoves into usable storage, the spaces standard wardrobes simply can't reach.
2. The timber
We build wardrobes in European oak, American oak, pine, beech, mahogany and walnut, or painted to any colour you like. Solid wood costs more than MDF, but it can be repaired, refinished and repainted for decades.
3. The inside
Drawers cost more than shelves, and specialist fittings such as shoe racks, double hanging rails and pull-down rails add up. Plan the interior around what you actually own, not a catalogue layout.
4. Doors and detailing
Plain, panelled, glazed or mirrored doors all price differently. Decorative cornice, turned details and period mouldings add character. Daniel's wood turning is a real advantage here, especially if you want to match existing furniture or woodwork in an older house.

Are bespoke wardrobes worth the money?
If you're staying in your home, usually yes. A bespoke wardrobe uses every inch from floor to ceiling. It's built around your clothes, and it's made from materials that last. Fitted wardrobes can also add appeal when you come to sell, because buyers see storage that's part of the house.
Bespoke also means the whole room can match. Lee Hough had two bedrooms fitted by us and put it well: "Two bedrooms completed with fully fitted wardrobes, drawers and matching bedside tables. From design to final fitting Daniel came up with exactly what I wanted with exceptional quality of workmanship and materials used." He then had a matching dining table made too.

Fitted or freestanding wardrobes?
We make both, and each has its place:
- Fitted is best for maximum storage, alcoves and awkward rooms. It becomes part of the house.
- Freestanding is best if you might move, or you want a statement piece of furniture. A solid wood freestanding wardrobe can go with you to the next home and be passed down.

- Adjusting skirting boards, picture rails or carpet
- Plastering and painting, which is best done before fitting
