1. Build it around the range
A farmhouse kitchen has a natural centre: the range. Frame it with a timber mantel or a chimney-breast surround, and plan the cabinets outwards from it. One of our recent projects pairs a painted country kitchen with a cream Aga and a solid island.
2. Choose soft, earthy paint colours
Cream, stone, sage green, muted blue and warm greys all suit the look. Hand-painted solid wood gives a softer, more natural finish than a factory spray. We offer a colour-matching service if you've already fallen for a shade.
3. Go chunky with wooden worktops
A thick solid oak worktop is the fastest way to make a painted kitchen feel like a farmhouse. It also wears beautifully: marks can be sanded out and re-oiled rather than replaced.
4. Add a dresser
A dresser is the most farmhouse piece of furniture there is. Plates on the rack, jugs on the shelves, drawers for linen. We make hand-painted Welsh dressers with solid oak tops, built to stand on their own or fit an alcove.
5. Mix fitted and freestanding
Real farmhouse kitchens grew over generations, so they rarely match perfectly. Combine fitted runs with a freestanding larder, dresser or table to get that collected-over-time feel.
6. Use reclaimed timber
Reclaimed pine brings patina and character that new wood can't fake. We keep a limited stock of reclaimed timbers in the workshop.
7. Put in a big island or a proper table
An island with a solid wood top, deep drawers and space for stools becomes the family's meeting point. In a smaller room, a handmade farmhouse table does the same job.
8. Open shelving and plate racks
Swap a few wall cupboards for oak shelves or a plate rack. It lightens the room and puts your everyday pottery on show.
9. Traditional hardware
Cup handles, bun knobs and latches in brass, iron or pewter finish the look. Choose them early, because they shape the whole character of the kitchen.

A traditional farmhouse kitchen leans into warm paint, wood and visible texture. A modern farmhouse kitchen keeps the Shaker doors and wooden worktops but uses cleaner lines, lighter colours, slimmer handles and fewer ornaments. Both depend on the same thing: honest materials and proper joinery.
Why a handmade farmhouse kitchen looks better
Farmhouse style is built on solid wood, so it shows up cheap materials straight away. A vinyl-wrapped "Shaker" door can't be sanded, repainted or aged gracefully. A handmade kitchen can.
