Country and Cottage Kitchen Ideas: 10 Handmade Looks

A country or cottage kitchen is cosy, practical and full of natural materials: solid wood cabinets, soft painted colours, wooden worktops, open shelves, a big sink and a mix of fitted and freestanding furniture. Cottage kitchens are usually smaller and more intimate. Country kitchens are more spacious, often with a range cooker and a big table. Both depend on handmade quality, because the style is all about texture and character.

At Oak & Pine by Design, we build country and cottage kitchens by hand in Honley, a village just outside Holmfirth, surrounded by exactly the kind of stone cottages these kitchens were made for. Here are our best ideas.

Country kitchen ideas

1. Make the range the centrepiece

Set a range cooker or Aga into the chimney breast, frame it with a timber mantel and build your runs out from there.

2. Choose earthy painted colours

Cream, sage, olive, stone and muted blue all feel right in the countryside. A hand-painted finish on solid wood has a softness that factory sprays can't match.

3. Add a proper kitchen table or island

Country kitchens are for gathering. A solid wood island with a thick top, or a handmade farmhouse table, becomes the heart of the house.

4. Bring in a dresser

A painted Welsh dresser with an oak top is the classic country piece, for display, storage and personality. We make them by hand in our workshop.

5. Use chunky wooden worktops

Thick oak or hardwood worktops add warmth and can be sanded and re-oiled for a lifetime.

Cottage kitchen ideas for small spaces

6. Make every inch count

Cottage kitchens often have sloping ceilings, deep window reveals, beams and walls that aren't straight. Made-to-measure units fill these spaces properly, without filler panels and wasted corners.

7. Keep wall cabinets light

Swap some wall cabinets for open shelves or a plate rack. It stops a small kitchen feeling boxed in.

8. Choose freestanding pieces

A freestanding larder, a small dresser or a butcher's block adds storage and that collected-over-time charm. Read more in our guide to handmade kitchens.

9. Go natural with pine

Waxed or painted pine is light, warm and uncomplicated, perfect for a cottage. Reclaimed pine adds genuine age and patina.

10. Use traditional details

Cup handles, latches, beaded panels and a Belfast sink complete the look. Daniel is a skilled woodturner, so turned knobs and details can be made to suit.

Why these kitchens need to be handmade

Old homes are rarely square. Standard units in set sizes leave gaps and awkward corners, which spoils the very character you're trying to create. A handmade kitchen is designed around your walls, beams and windows, then built in our workshop and fitted by the people who made it.

It also means the materials are real. Solid wood ages gracefully in a country kitchen, and a hand-painted finish can be touched in and refreshed for decades. Our clients feel the difference. Clare Earle wrote: "We are delighted with our new kitchen. It's stunning, I wish we would have heard about you earlier."

Frequently asked questions

What colours suit a cottage kitchen?

Soft creams, sage and olive greens, pale blues and warm stone shades, ideally with natural wood worktops.

How do you make a small cottage kitchen feel bigger?

Use light colours, open shelving instead of some wall cabinets, and made-to-measure units that use every inch, including awkward corners.

Can a country kitchen look modern?

Yes. Keep the solid wood and Shaker doors, but use cleaner handles, lighter colours and fewer ornaments.

What is the best wood for a country kitchen?

Oak for strength and grain, and pine for warmth and a lighter price. Both take paint beautifully.
