A built-in bookcase is shelving made to fit a specific wall, alcove or recess, usually floor to ceiling and wall to wall, so it looks like part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. Popular designs include alcove bookcases either side of a chimney breast, a full library wall, bookcases around a doorway or window, and under-stairs shelving. A bespoke bookcase uses every inch of the space and can be built to carry heavy books without sagging.
At Oak & Pine by Design, we make bespoke bookcases and fitted shelving by hand in our Honley workshop. Recent work includes bespoke fitted bookshelves, a double bookcase with a centre pilaster, and bespoke pine bookcases. Here are our best ideas.
Built-in bookcase ideas
1. Alcove bookcases
The classic. Shelves above, cupboards below, fitted to each side of the chimney breast. See our guide to alcove cupboards and shelving.
2. A full library wall
Floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall shelving turns a living room, study or landing into a library.
3. Around a doorway
Shelves that wrap over and around a door frame use space that's usually wasted and create a striking feature.
4. Around a window with a window seat
Bookcases either side of a window, with a cushioned seat and drawers beneath, make the perfect reading nook.
5. Under the stairs
Stepped shelving under the stairs follows the line of the staircase and adds storage in an awkward space.
6. Landing and hallway shelves
Shallow shelves can fit narrow landings and corridors where a freestanding bookcase won't.
7. Bookcase with a media space
Combine books with a TV, speakers and record storage in one fitted unit.
8. Classical details
Pilasters, cornice and panelled lower doors give a bookcase real architectural presence, especially in period homes.

Why bespoke bookcases are better than flat-pack

- They fit perfectly. Scribed to uneven walls and ceilings, with no gaps.
- They don't sag. Solid timber shelves at the right span carry heavy books for decades.
- They use every inch, including the awkward corners flat-pack can't reach.
- They're designed for what you own: tall art books, records, vinyl or a TV.
- They look like architecture, not furniture pushed against a wall.
How to design a built-in bookcase
- Measure what you store. Paperbacks, hardbacks and records need different shelf heights.
- Keep spans sensible. Long, thin shelves bow under books, so use uprights or thicker timber.
- Consider cupboards below for clutter and heavier items.
- Plan lighting before it's built, if you want it.
- Choose the finish: painted to match the walls, or natural oak, walnut or pine.
Which wood is best for a bookcase?
- Oak: strong, handsome and classic
- Pine: light, warm and more affordable, lovely waxed or painted
- Walnut: rich and luxurious for a statement library
- Painted hardwood: the classic look for alcoves and period rooms
What our clients say
Malcolm Craig had made-to-measure bookshelves and stereo shelves built alongside other fitted pieces: "Very high quality of workmanship, and great fit and finish. Would wholeheartedly recommend."
Frequently asked questions
How deep should a built-in bookcase be?
Deep enough for your largest books, without overwhelming the room. Shelves for paperbacks can be shallower than those for art books or records.
Do built-in bookcases add value?
Well-made fitted shelving is an attractive feature for buyers, especially in period homes.
Can you build a bookcase around a door or window?
Yes. Wrapping shelves around doors and windows is a great way to use space, and it's ideal for made-to-measure joinery.
Can you match a bookcase to my existing furniture?
Yes. We match timber, colour and details, and we can hand-turn elements to match.
