Alcove Cupboards and Shelving Ideas

Alcove Cupboards and Shelving Ideas
Alcove Cupboards and Shelving Ideas

Alcove cupboards and shelving turn the recesses either side of a chimney breast into useful, beautiful storage. The classic design is cupboards below and open shelves above, built to fit the alcove exactly, from wall to wall and often floor to ceiling. Because alcoves in older homes are rarely square, made-to-measure units look far better than off-the-shelf furniture pushed into the gap.

At Oak & Pine by Design, we make alcove cupboards, shelving and fitted furniture by hand in our Honley workshop in West Yorkshire. Here's how to get alcoves right.

Alcove cupboard and shelving ideas

1. Cupboards below, shelves above

The most popular design, and for good reason. Cupboards hide clutter, and shelves display books and treasures. The cupboard top makes a handy surface.

2. Floor-to-ceiling cupboards

Full-height cupboards give maximum hidden storage. They're great in bedrooms, dining rooms and playrooms.

3. Open shelving only

Solid wood shelves across the alcove create a light, simple library look.

4. A media unit

Build the TV, speakers and consoles into the alcoves, with cable management and ventilation planned in.

5. A desk in the alcove

A fitted desk with shelves above makes a compact home office.

6. Alcove wardrobes

In bedrooms, alcoves are perfect for fitted wardrobes. Read our guide to handmade wardrobes.

7. Painted to match the walls

Painting the units the same colour as the walls makes them feel built into the architecture.

8. Period details

Panelled doors, cornice and beading echo the original features of a Victorian or Edwardian room.

How much do alcove cupboards cost?

The cost of alcove units depends on the size of the alcove, the timber or finish, the number of doors and shelves, and any details such as cornice or lighting. Fitted furniture made by a carpenter or cabinet maker is usually priced per project rather than per unit. After a free first consultation, you'll get a detailed written proposal, so you know exactly what's included.

Why made-to-measure alcove units look better

Chimney breast alcoves in older houses are almost never square. Walls lean, floors slope and the depth changes from top to bottom. Freestanding furniture leaves visible gaps. Made-to-measure units are scribed to the walls, so they look as if they've always been there.

Our client Malcolm Craig had made-to-measure bookshelves, stereo shelves, a pantry and more: "Very high quality of workmanship, and great fit and finish. Would wholeheartedly recommend."

Solid wood vs MDF alcove units

MDF is common for painted alcove units because it's smooth and cheap. Solid wood shelves won't sag under books, can be repaired and repainted, and can be left natural. Painted cupboards with solid oak or pine shelves and tops give you the best of both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best depth for alcove cupboards?

It depends on the alcove and what you're storing, but shallow enough not to overwhelm the chimney breast. We design the depth around the room.

Should alcove shelves be floating or fitted?

Floating shelves look minimal but need solid fixings. Fitted shelves with supports are stronger for heavy books.

Do alcove cupboards add value?

Well-made fitted storage is attractive to buyers, especially in period homes where storage is often limited.

Can you match alcove units to my existing furniture?

Yes. We match timber, colour and details, including hand-turned elements.
